OK, let’s face it! If you live in Morehead, you see doors everywhere. If you live in Beaufort, you see doors everywhere. If you live in Greenville, guess what? There are doors everywhere there also.
I started really thinking about doors. I looked up the definition of door. The definition is: a movable, usually solid, barrier for opening and closing an entrance way, cupboard, cabinet, or the like, commonly turning on hinges or sliding in grooves. It us such a simple definition, yet doors do so much! Let’s face it, EVERYONE has a door. If you are a homeowner in Morehead, your home has a door. If you are a business owner in Beaufort, your business has a door. If you rent a home or an apartment in Wilmington, well, you’ve got a door also.
A simple 4 letter word, yet a door serves so many purposes in everyone’s life.
1. A door provides you an entrance way into your home, and it protects you from the outside weather elements. Let’s say you live somewhere that has extremely harsh winters, and the temperature gets down below zero degrees. Or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, like here in Morehead, Beaufort, and Greenville, we have extremely hot summers when it seems that you could cook an egg on the sidewalk. In either of those instances, would you prefer to have a less expensive door that saved you a little money, yet provides no real protection from the elements outside? Or would you rather have a door that actually seals around the opening, and stops the “outside" weather from coming “inside” your home?
2. A door also protects you from unwelcome people inside your home. If a person who is up to no good is walking around your neighborhood looking for a home to break into, do you think that they are going to choose a home that has a sturdy front door, or do you think that they are going to choose a home that has a flimsy looking door?
3. A door also serves as a first glimpse into your home. When a guest comes to your home, the very first contact they have with your actual home, is your front door. And your front door makes a statement about the rest of your home.
In essence, the real PURPOSE of a door is to protect you, the homeowner. If your front door is inexpensive, unsturdy, and not able to keep out of your home what you don’t invite it, then is your door really serving it’s purpose? There are other than aesthetically benefits of course, there is the protection it offers you and your family, the look of your home, the “feel” of your home, and the value of your home.
